Hyatt House Midtown Sacramento.
A Hyatt House is a Hyatt House, right?
For the most part at this brand new property, that holds true… with a couple major caveats.
This location sits across the street from Sutter Fort, and is in a building originally constructed in 1928. The history is preserved in the entry and the hotel restaurant, along with some images adorning guest-room hallways.
Additionally, the Star Lounge on the 3rd floor acts not just as a place to grab the typical Hyatt House breakfast in the morning, but serves as a hot new Sacramento restaurant.
We checked in at 5:30, anxious to make it upstairs before happy hour ended. While we had seen renderings of the exterior online, they didn’t do the historical front facade justice.
The valet took our car at $35 for the night. It was a cost we determined beforehand and decided was marginally worthwhile vs Ubering from our house.
The front desk welcomed us to their 8th day of operations, and she was clearly overwhelmed with phone calls, guest requests, and directing people to the restaurant. At one point while checking in she answered the phone “Holiday Inn”, (where it seems she previously worked).
After being recognized for globalist status, offered our waters, and getting our keys, we took the elevator to the top (8th) floor and went down the hall to our room.
Our standard king Guestroom had been upgraded to a high floor, but given what was available online, I was disappointed not to be granted a suite (though when it comes to Hyatt House, that’s not an entitlement).
The room was a bit smaller than I expected, but still comfortable enough with a King Bed, a lounger, Microwave and mini-fridge, and a bathroom with a large shower.
We dropped our bags, snapped a couple photos, and rushed to happy hour.
I was mildly surprised to find a packed restaurant with no seats left and only a sliver of space to stand by the bar. I was immediately frustrated, as it was pretty obvious this was not guests from the hotel, but the Sacramento Friday-night scene seeping in. I figured they must be underprepared for such a surge, but we found one chair at the bar for my wife to sit at, and things actually went mostly smooth at that point. We had some excellent Margheritas, Truffle Fries, a slider and a Taco and were incredibly pleased (and quickly plastered after just two strong drinks).
We went around the corner afterwards for a full dinner at a different restaurant, and returned to the room just after 8, where we promptly passed out.
In the morning we returned to the restaurant for breakfast. In an area that had been closed off during dinner sat the typical Hyatt House spread, and we consumed the basic bacon, Scrambled eggs, and French toast sticks while admiring the architecture of the room.
We returned to the room for a short nap, but when I tried to wake my wife to leave at 11:30, she said no! I went downstairs to inquire about a late checkout and was asked what time I wanted to leave. We agreed on a 2 P.M Departure. I spent the next couple hours working up this review and playing video games in the empty restaurant.
When we finally left, my wife noted that a panel above the shower was open, exposing insulation and pipes. While it didn’t inconvenience us at all, they still offered 400 points for the issue: a lovely gesture.
Ultimately this hotel is in a hot spot with a hot new bar/restaurant, but in most other aspects is typical of what you’d expect from a Hyatt House- clean, comfortable and basic.
Cheers!
